Introduction to immigration and other laws; academic expectations on the University of Iowa campus; cultural adjustment; how to succeed academically; caring for one's mental health; web-based course for new international undergraduate students.
While international students face many of the same challenges that domestic students face, they also must deal with additional challenges that come with having to adjust to a new culture, a new educational environment, and often a second language. The University of Iowa offers a week of orientation before the semester begins to help deal with immediate needs so that new international undergraduates experience a positive, consistent entry and orientation. However, the majority of an undergraduate international student’s transition occurs after the formal orientation program as they become immersed in a new academic and social culture: unaware of the degree of independent functioning expected, sitting through courses filled with unfamiliar cultural references, dealing with fast-paced and colloquial English, and wondering how to meet and form relationships with American students.
Topical content will address academic issues such as American classroom expectations, discussion-based courses, time management, oral presentations, General Education and academic honesty; cultural issues such as the role of independence and responsibility in American culture, homesickness, and campus resources.
The course is scheduled to run for 8 weeks with periodic quizzes. While there is a basic course schedule, students may pace themselves and are encouraged to finish early. There are no additional course materials required. There are currently no course meetings required, but an instructor will be available to provide any assistance needed.
