Analysis of unfamiliar English words through knowledge of the history and meaning of word parts.

Description:

Approximately 80% of English words are derived from Greek and Latin. These words are made up of Greek or Latin elements, each with an English meaning of its own. In this course students learn a systematic method of vocabulary recognition by analyzing English words into their Latin or Greek parts and defining each part. The course is good preparation for standardized tests and reading in general.  Requirements include four midterms and a final exam. The texts are Ayers's English Words From Latin and Greek Elements and The American Heritage College Dictionary.   Web-based course.  This is an independent study course.  General information is on the Classics website at http://www.uiowa.edu/~classics/courses/wordpower.html and the course syllabus can be found on ICON.
